Unlocking potential. Empowering futures.

At Free SA, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools to break the cycle of poverty and create equal opportunities for all. The Free SA Empower Education Fund is designed to help deserving South African children access quality education by providing financial support to attend low-cost affordable private schools. By contributing to this fund, you are directly helping a child achieve their potential and secure a brighter future.

What is the Free SA Empower Education Fund?

The Empower Education Fund is a collective effort to provide scholarships for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, regardless of race, allowing them to attend affordable private schools. Our goal is to raise enough funds to support these children through the entire educational cycle, from one year to potentially up to five years, depending on available resources. We believe that every child, regardless of their background or race, should have access to high-quality education, and with your help, we can make that vision a reality.

How it works

Through the FreeSA Empower Education Fund, we invite you to contribute in a variety of ways to help support a child’s education. The more we raise, the more children we can support. Our funding options are simple and transparent:

Choose Your Own Amount

Any donation amount, large or small, makes a difference.

Fund a Week

Contribute to covering a child’s educational costs for a week.

Fund a Month

Provide enough funding to support a child for an entire month.

Fund a Year

Fully sponsor a child for one year of schooling.

At launch, the Free SA Empower Education Fund will begin by funding one child’s full year of education. By showcasing one child’s journey, we hope to inspire others to contribute to the fund and help more children access the education they deserve.

We also offer an option for recurring donations, allowing you to contribute to the Empower Education Fund on a regular basis, making it easier to support the long-term educational journey of deserving students.

Voucherised education: Our policy position

Free SA strongly supports the concept of voucherised education as a means of providing equitable access to quality schooling for all South African children, regardless of their socio-economic background. Voucherised education refers to a system where families are given financial support in the form of educational vouchers. These vouchers can be used to pay for tuition at a variety of accredited schools, including private institutions, enabling parents to choose the best educational option for their children.

We believe that education is a fundamental right, and every child should have the opportunity to attend a school that meets their needs and prepares them for the future. Voucherised education is an important tool to achieve this, as it empowers parents to make informed decisions about their child’s education, promotes school competition, and encourages better quality in the education system. It helps to bridge the gap between those who can afford private schooling and those who cannot, creating a more level playing field.

Why we advocate for voucherised education

  1. Increased Access to Quality Education: By providing parents with the means to choose the best educational environment for their children, voucherised education ensures that all students—especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds—have access to better resources and opportunities for success.

  2. Empowerment for Parents and Communities: Vouchers give families the power to choose a school based on their values, educational philosophy, and the needs of their children, leading to more personalized and effective learning experiences.

  3. Fostering Innovation and Competition: With schools vying for funding through vouchers, they are incentivized to improve the quality of their education, which benefits all students, not just those with access to better schools.

  4. Breaking the Cycle of Inequality: By offering more choices in education, voucherised systems help level the playing field for students from lower-income households, giving them the opportunity to break free from generational poverty.

  5. Supporting School Diversity: Voucherised education allows for a wider range of educational models to thrive, including those that are innovative, entrepreneurial, and specialized to meet the needs of different students.
