Key Concerns with the Proposed Bill
  • Threat to Price Stability & Currency Value: The SARB currently has a clear mandate to maintain inflation between 3–6 %, safeguarding jobs, savings, and social grants. Undermining this independence risks runaway inflation and increased government power over an already struggling economy.

  • Fiscal Irresponsibility: Bringing the SARB under tighter political control could turn it into an instrument for financing government deficits, harming taxpayers and the economy.

  • Investor & Consumer Confidence: Autonomy of central banks underpins trust in rand-denominated assets. Politicisation could drive investors and capital away, exacerbating unemployment and poverty .

  • Retain SARB Independence: Preserve the SARB’s current mandate, focused on inflation control and financial stability.

  • Protect Constitutional Checks: Reject any amendment that weakens the SARB’s autonomy or alters its mandate without proper democratic process.
