Public Participation: Do South Africans trust Commissions of Enquiry?

In July 2025, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi exposed shocking claims that high-ranking officials—including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu—sabotaged investigations into political assassinations. He revealed evidence of interference, cover-ups, and corruption, including the shutdown of a specialist task team and the disappearance of over 100 case dockets.

Tell Parliament You Demand Accountability

These allegations, if true, strike at the heart of our democracy and the safety of our communities. South Africans deserve a police service that is free from political manipulation—and leaders who are held to account.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been placed on a leave of absence, with a judicial commission of inquiry set to investigate the allegations.

But here’s the real question:
Do you still have faith in judicial commissions of inquiry — or do you believe it’s time to arrest all implicated officials on suspicion of fraud and corruption?

Have your say below.

More about this campaign

Key Concerns with the Current Situation

  • Political interference in police work: Allegations suggest senior leaders obstructed murder investigations linked to political violence.

  • Suppression of critical evidence: Over 120 case dockets were reportedly seized and shelved without oversight.

  • Tender corruption: A R360 million SAPS contract recipient is allegedly linked to the effort to dissolve the task team.

  • Whistleblower at risk: Commissioner Mkhwanazi’s career—and life—may be in danger for exposing the truth.

  • Public trust eroded: Citizens cannot trust a justice system that silences those who protect the rule of law.

What we're advocating for

We demand swift, transparent, and accountable action from government:

  1. Immediate suspension of implicated officials pending investigation.

  2. Investigation at the highest level without further delay.

  3. Full transparency on the cost, scope, and outcomes of previous commissions.

  4. Clear timelines for implementation of recommendations from past inquiries.
