South Africa’s economy is under immense pressure, with sluggish growth, high unemployment, and declining investor confidence. Many South Africans are questioning whether policies like Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), originally introduced to address the injustices of apartheid, are still serving their purpose—or if they are now contributing to inefficiency, corruption, and economic exclusion.
Some argue that BBBEE must continue indefinitely to redress historical inequality. Others believe it has outlived its usefulness and that it’s time to transition away from race-based policy toward a more inclusive, merit-based system. Still others want it abolished immediately, saying it entrenches elite enrichment and slows down economic recovery.
