The South African government has released its draft regulations for the National Health Insurance (NHI) Fund and is calling for public comment. These regulations outline how the government intends to control and finance healthcare under the NHI—but they fail to address the crippling costs, financial risks, and potential for corruption that come with this Fund, and the NHI at large.
The proposed NHI Fund will centralise all healthcare spending under government control, eliminating private medical aids as we know them. However, the government has not provided a clear, sustainable plan for funding this massive scheme. Instead, the NHI will depend on ever-increasing taxes, further burdening South Africans and threatening the country’s fragile economy.
If the NHI is implemented, South Africa risks a financial and healthcare system collapse—one where taxpayers pay more but receive worse healthcare.
