The role of speaking up in NERSA’s rejection of Eskom’s asked price hike

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) recently approved a 12.7% electricity tariff increase for Eskom, effective from April 1, 2025. This decision followed Eskom’s initial request for a massive 36% hike, which was met with significant public opposition during nationwide hearings and in national formal and informal media. All accounts agree that the voices of normal South Africans and small businesses played a major role in NERSA’s decision.
